Angela immediately joined in:

Well I don’t know if all that’s true

’Cause you got me, and baby, I got you.

Then, together, with harmony, louder:

Babe.

I got you, babe.

I got you, babe.

“Oh my God, that was my favorite movie, Groundhog Day,” Angela said.

“Exactly! I was just thinking about what if, you know—”

“Like we repeat this part of our lives again and again—”

“Every morning six a.m.—”

“On the alarm radio.”

“And it starts all over again. The same day.”

“But in our movie we’d be sitting on a log in the woods, repeating the same lines, like, ‘I don’t have any bars on my phone.’ ” Angela did this deadpan, making fun of herself in the voice of a whiny adolescent.

“People in these parts aren’t exactly up to date,” Sonny said, playing along, in a plausible Bill Murray imitation. They laughed.

“And you’re named Sonny, too.”

It took Sonny a moment to realize, “Oh, like Sonny and Cher.”

“Yeah. And like Phil Conners had the same name as the groundhog.”

“Punxsutawney Phil,” Sonny said triumphantly.

“Bravo.” Then: “People think it’s just a comedy but—”

“I think it’s profound.”

“It’s all connected.”

“Layers upon layers.”

Angela looked at Sonny with wide-eyed appreciation. “We’re going to be friends,” she concluded.
